Avalon Games Parties like it’s 2017 in December!

It’s that time again, the time where we all sit back and think about how thankful we are. Thankful for customers and our legions of game writers, editors, and artists. Thankful for our families who let us do this and our daily existences at “normal” jobs that get us through the dry periods.

Some of us are thankful we can still create—that we haven’t lost our senses or our capabilities despite getting older and more bogged down with stress and such.

We are grateful for all these things and hope to continue serving the gaming community in the future.

Have a wonderful holiday should you celebrate and a stress-free December as we transition into the new year.

Here are this month’s releases.

Avalon Spell Books, Vol 1, Issue #10

AVG5300-SP-10

$3.99

5 Pages

By Maria Smolina

Avalon takes a common spell and provides you with a number of alterations and additions to add excitement and useful options for your next adventure.  Each issue of Avalon Spell Books will focus on a new spell, discussing different versions of the spell, providing different components that can be used to alter the way the spell works, and even adding feats and new magical items linked to the spell in question.

Size Does Matter

While there is a whole bunch of spells that alter a creature's size—from enlarge person to giant form—many spellcasters find some inherent problems with them.

For instance, the inability of enlarge person and reduce person spells to affect anyone but humanoids has always been suspicious to spellcasters, especially to native outsiders such as aasimars and tieflings, as well as fey and monstrous humanoids such as hags.

Eventually researchers discovered a number of ways of modifying the basic spell to meet the needs of creatures other than core races, using some variant spell components, presented in “Variant spell components” section.

Another issue is with these spell lists already having a few spells to change size of creatures other than humanoids—animal growthand giant vermin being some well-known examples. What of the many other entities, from plants to elementals, which may need enlarging or reducing? While it is definitely possible to design many new spells to affect sizes, these spells are unlikely to become a pick for any spellcasters that have limitations, or be regularly prepared by those who have to choose their daily powers every morning. There is one more way to make a creature smaller or larger—by nonconventional use of already existing spells that are not normally targeted at creatures of these types. Using old spells like plant growth or quell energy (Pathfinder Player Companion: Occult Origins), you can affect some creatures, changing their size categories. Such spell uses are presented in the “Spells of growth and withering”.

This and much more is discussed in this issue of Spell Books!

Look for other great Pathfinder-based gaming goodies from Avalon Games.

One Knight Games, Vol 3, Issue 15, Going Down South

AVG4900-44

22 Pages

A. J. Keening

$2.99

Going Down South: A ‘copter has gone down during an illegal military operation in the far-eastern country of Seora. By the terms of the peace treaty that concluded an international war back in the 60s, none of the signatory foreign powers are allowed to perform military maneuvers of any kind in or near Seora, which is the trouble. A crashed military chopper and its captured crew would be absolute proof that military operations continued, despite all denials to the contrary. The crew and military personnel need to be removed from the country before they can be paraded around in front of cameras. Indeed, only an independent force can do the job without attracting further international disgrace.

IF Threats, Star Pirates

AVG 3100-2.0- PI

19 Pages

$5.99

A. J. Kenning

Space Pirates

Vast fortunes are made extracting the many resources of the worlds of the Fringe, where there is little law and even less oversight from the otherwise watchful eyes of the governments back home in the Core Worlds. Yet, while large sums of wealth are traded back and forth amongst a few, the bulk of the population out in the Fringe lives in abject poverty, sometimes even in slavery.

This combination of wealth outside the Core’s watchful eyes and insufficiency among many—it is a heady mixture that produces piracy. The allure of seizing a wealthy cargo to become instantly rich (or at least well-off for a time) succors many. Should they make the attempt, and survive the results, the dream can even become true. (Until the day the Star Marshals come knocking on their door, of course.)

While pirates are commonly known for being an independent lot, in actuality, a surprisingly large amount of the piracy that occurs is sponsored.  Of this, the most common type is corporate piracy—pirates given a free hand to seize whatever they can of assets of the sponsor's rivals (corporate, government, or civilian). Since the corporations are oft the most sizable force of law in the Fringe, it can wind up being a very free hand indeed, as long as the pirates are caught somewhere where the sponsor has influence, as opposed to a rival power. These corporate privateers may, from time to time, be tasked by the sponsor with seizing particular cargo, but are mostly given free reign to act as they normally would, except with an extremely favored list of people to hit (and a list of friends not to hit), with bonus pay for hitting certain targeted goals, such as taking X amount from a certain corporate rival and their agents.

Privateers are far from the only pirates operating within the Fringe. On the other side of things are those awful individuals that give piracy its feared reputations—the most depraved, the most foul in deeds and action. Slavers, killers and kidnappers, these pirates are well-known for boarding ships in the deeps of space and raping, torturing, and killing everyone on board. They prey mainly on small trade ships and transports, but occasionally raid outlying outposts and colonies with equally brutal force and carnage. There are countless bands of these pirates, some as small as a few hard individuals, or as large as the Pirate Lords of the outer belts, with thousands of blackguards and hundreds of ships within their company. Some of these Pirate Lords have made such a name for themselves that they are even known by the common citizens back on the Core Worlds. Names such a Black-Eyed Pete and the pirate queen Morgan the Red-Handed. Others, though, are just nameless killers and raiders, seeking a quick path to riches within the hardest part of the galaxy that is the space frontier.

Inside you will find all you need to run Star Pirates in your IF games. New advanced classes and more adventure wait, so take a flight into the night skies and have an adventure.

Avalon Games is Flying High for November!

Having worked for a company that dealt almost exclusively with mountaineering books, I can safely tell you that there are a lot of issues with climbing a mountain. Aside from exposure to cold, dryness, and blistering sun, there’s also a definitive risk of altitude sickness, which is a reaction to changes in the oxygen percentage of the air. In addition, everyone responds differently to these issues. Any time your characters are climbing anything over 4,800 feet (1,463 m), or less if from a subterranean origin, you should start rolling dice for reactions to such things. At 8,000 feet (2438 m) double the risk or severity. A mild reaction starts similar to a hangover; a severe reaction includes shortness of breath and more severe hangover symptoms, plus the person is incoherent and incapable of sound judgment. A victim can develop high-altitude pulmonary edema or high-altitude cerebral edema and about 50% of individuals that develop coma with high-altitude cerebral edema die.

So your party really should reconsider that trip to the top of the mountain for treasure unless thorough prep or magic is involved.

Here are this month’s releases.

Cantrip Performance

Bards dancing with lights circling around in rhythmic tempo. Bards playing harps with surrounding trees swinging their branches to the music. If a bard has not been using these stylish magics to enhance their performance all along, then it's only because they have no idea of what some simple cantrips can do to improve their performance abilities.

The new option presented here regarding combining cantrips and bardic performance assumes adding magic flavor to performance can actually make a mechanical difference. Any such performance requires more time than the basic bardic one—after all, if you need only a free action to maintain the performance, then it should be considered effortless and without benefit.

Along with extra time, cantrip performance usually requires greater skill, often calling for a Perform skill check to produce desired effects. This combination, as well as potential new bonuses from successful cantrip performances, makes them a meaningful game choice rather than same round-to-round routine.

This and much more is discussed in this issue of Spell Books!

IF Threats, Star Marshals

AVG 3100-2.0- SM

21 Pages

$5.99

A. J. Kenning

The Star Marshals

The Federation is a union of a number of planets and allied species of various kinds. Federation Known Space is a territory shaped a lot like an egg. The most advanced part of Known Space, the Core Worlds, are the yoke, while the expanse beyond that yoke is an untamed wilderness called The Fringe. And beyond the Fringe lies the Unknown.

The Fringe is largely a lawless place, despite being nominally under Federation control. While influence from the Federation planets does exist, that influence is spread too thin and to wide. At the same time, the many worlds of the Fringe hold the promise of freedom and vast stores of unspoiled resources ready for the taking. In such a place, the lawless thrive. Vast fortunes are made...by the pirate and mercenary bands that prey on the weak and helpless. Not to mention the corporate conglomerates, who exploit their workers in any number of ways, far from the watchful eye of the Federation enforcement agencies.

In this dangerous realm, small colonies largely depend upon the meager resources their corporate sponsors choose to send them, or in some cases must hire their own militias and protection at an expense that they can ill-afford. Concepts such as “Law and Order” are thus thought as something that is bought and sold, going to the highest bidder.

In such a realm, there is little respect and less money dedicated to active police. And most of what few such organizations there are thought of as ineffectual at best, corrupt or incompetent at worst. They are also underpaid and overworked. There are, though, a dedicated few who still try to keep the peace and bring law and order to the outlaw worlds of this wild region – the famed Star Marshals.

3

The Star Marshals are an elite law enforcement outfit under the nominal control of the Federation. The core stated goal of the Star Marshals is to keep the Fringe safe from the various criminal elements that infest it.

However, their true goal is to keep the chaos and crime of the outer regions from spilling back into the Core Worlds. Their job is immense and never-ending, policing a huge amount of space with scant resources and even scanter aid from both the Core Worlds and the Fringe (who tend to resent outside influence on their territory, except during the immediate aftermath of a terrible crime that they are ill-equipped to handle).

Thus each day the fearless men and woman of the Star Marshals must battle a tide of never-ending lawlessness and hostilities. Space pirates are, of course, the most plentiful foe that the Star Marshals must face, and frequently (but not always) the crimes that they commit are the most horrific. However, in fact the tasks deeded to the Star Marshals run the gamut from dealing with criminal and/or exploitative corporate actions, rebellious military generals, and alien incursions into Fringe space. Those that succeed at these daunting tasks become legend. Those that fail are simply dead.

In the end, the task of the Star Marshals in endless and thankless, but those few that hear the call, answer it and conduct themselves with pride and honor.

In the vastness of space, few will ever see justice, unless you bring it to the,

Arcana Realms, Piannith

AVG2300-Rl-PIA

56 Pages

$2.99

A realm on the edge of the wild southern plains, many old grudges are held there against the realm of Mithniera, as the two are constant rivals for control of the western trade out of the east.

The southernmost realm in the west, Piannith has a short, but bloody history.  The realm began with the fall of the Tharm Empire and the civil wars that raged about the region after central control of the lands faltered. Many old hates, ambitions, and feuds flared up, and one of these was an ancient dispute between Marth and Durnina.  The two noble lines have had an ongoing hate for each other that goes back to before the Tharn rule.  After the fall of the empire, the rivalry resurfaced and erupted into war.  This bloody battle continued until both sides were forced to stop their armed conflict by the other barons of the region.  From this gathering of lords came the new kingdom of Piannith.

The newly elected king of the realm gathered and consolidated his control and the crown grew in power.  This ended with the rebellion of the Baron of Durnina and his allies.  He brought down the current king and installed a new one in the form of the royal line of Kunnina.  Durnina was stripped of most of its lands and all but its control of the town of Thargmor.  This, of course, did not last long and the current baron enjoys strong influence within the realm once more.

King Festor Kunnina took the reins of power with surety and confidence, and settles many feuds and problems with a swift and iron hand.  The realm continued to prosper, fighting back barbarian raids out of the south and  goblin attacks from the hills about the mountains. However, recent wars with Mithniera over control of the Red Bridge have brought the realm low once more and the king rants about retaking what is rightfully his.

Magic Aura

The Magic Aura spell has long been part of the cheating trader's repertoire, a safety measure in areas where magic is restricted, or an occasional way to set an attractive decoy. Primarily ignored by adventurers, it is a potentially valuable asset to a dungeon-keeper or any spellcaster who already has a dwelling protected by magic.

To make the spell really worth casting, one needs to consider two tricks with the aura-changing mechanics that are not automatically available with this spell. The first trick is adding it as a permanent effect to a magical item—or even better, to a magical trap—which is really the best way to deal with those intruders who routinely check everything with the cheap detect magic zero-level spell before making a step forward. The second path of improvement requires increasing the spell's area to affect larger objects and even places, potentially masking overland enchantments and multiple minor magics within.

Finally, being able to alter the ways your spells are perceived by other creatures can grow into a full-scale illusionist technique, based on manipulating the auras of existing spells. As an example of such techniques, a new focused arcane school of aura-shaping is presented, with some new aura-related powers.

This and much more is discussed in this issue of Spell Books!

Some of those goods aren’t quite kosher, if you know what I mean, but it’s all in a day’s work for a mercenary company. To carry all those goods at once, the mercs have stripped their ‘copter of a lot of their usual equipment— well behind the battle lines, it’s not really a worry. Except, a hired hit squad has been dogging the mercs from a distance for a while now waiting for a good chance to strike, which just got handed to them on a silver platter....

IF Threats, The Tealnik

AVG 3100-2.0- TE

17 Pages

$5.99

A. J. Kenning

The Tealnik are an old-fashioned people who fiercely believe in a strongly decentralized government. They are constantly fighting one another in ancient family feuds, duels of honor, and wars of aggression. Though they are isolationists who are uncomfortable interacting with members of other species, the Tealnik readily venture far into the Fringe in order to find dangerous beasts to hunt and worthy forces to battle with in order to further increase their personal honor. Their planetary holdings are an old-world mixture of teeming cities, vast rural tracts, and heavily restricted wilderness areas (hunting preserves).

In the vastness of space, few will ever see a Tealnik; those few that do will never see them coming.
