Chaotic Blast of Multicolored Hues

Lawful divine spellcasters have long been suspicious of enthropic shields. The spell has “enthropic” word in it and it creates a “chaotic blast of multicolored hues”, yet it does not register as a chaotic spell. Any explanations based on this spell being a minor version of higher-level “prismatic” spells do not seem feasible, since arcane spellcasters seem to have no access at all to this kind of magic, except for sorcerers with the protean bloodline. So why are gods of all alignments reconciled with this spell, despite so obviously using wild chaotic energies?

One simple answer is that most spellcasters are using a limited version of the spell, providing only the most obvious and unaligned concealment bonus. When a spellcaster chooses to delve a bit deeper into the spell’s energies, enthropic shield offers some new choices and uses. The most eminent of such uses is the spell’s ability to end preliminarily in certain cases, releasing its energy to fuel some other chaotic effects.

One thing about all these races—they are Animal Folk. That is a given in the campaign world of Kung Fu Kuma. But if you purchased this book intending it for use in a different game setting or universe, all of these races are compatible with the general Pathfinder Game System™, though the Gamemaster will have to come up with some reason why Animal Folk exist in that campaign world.

Six New PC Races!

Not many people live out in the islands to the east, south, and southeast of Qiu Sang. Of those that do, most are Humans. Not all, though. A wide variety of Animal Folk make their lives out amongst the islands.

For one reason or another, a number of Animal Folk races live solely out in the barbarian lands, ignoring the safety and civilization of Qiu Sang. This races book details seven Animal Folk races who are important amongst the barbarian tribes, six of them available as PC races. Many more races than that exist amongst the jungles and plains of the barbarian lands, but these seven are the ones most encountered when traversing barbarian lands.

Because these are barbarian races, PCs of these races are going to be restricted from taking the 12 Clans Classes of Qiu Sang. As barbarians, and likely proud of their heritage, they will be taking levels in Barbarian Classes alone. It is a part of the price one pays for living apart from Qiu Sang.

One New Companion Race

For some, the concept of Companion Races might be entirely new. A Companion Race is a race that is close to the PC Races in power and ability, but not intended for use as PCs; instead, they are intended to be used as companions.

But what is a companion? Aides, stewards, servants, allies, and henchmen—these are the main roles for Companion Races. A Companion Race is a race that could be a PC race, but for one reason or another, they don't have that special something that makes them ideal adventurers. When they do become involved in adventures, they mostly play a support role.

To put that in game terms: a Companion Race is a race for characters that the Player may haves some limited control over, but which are not themselves PCs. In a world about Animal Folk, these races add a little bit more color to the world that would not otherwise be there.

[Avalon Games] Prepare for Battle with new Products in June!

Battle Maneuvers. I’ve been in a medieval reenactment society that does heavy weapons combat and I have to say that everyone has their favorite melee and tournament maneuvers.
So should the GM, whether it’s in hand-to-hand or ship-to-ship. Come up with about a half-dozen flying maneuvers or strikes for each of your major NPCs and keep them on file. Beast Form Secrets
The beast shape spell family is far from exotic. Not because many wizards eagerly prepare this spell (they do not, and they have reasons for that), not because many magi choose to fight as animals (they typically prefer blades and spellcasting), but because druids spend their lives polymorphing to anything that runs, swims, flies or burrows.
While there are many magic enhancements for animal and monstrous forms, few of them fully explore the fact that any shapechanging is curiously close to lycanthropy, making a druid in wild shape and a “monstrous” lycanthrope very similar from a certain point of view.
Another interesting aspect of changing shapes is that many alternate forms prevent any use of classic spells (at least as long as you do not have Natural Spell Feat), but still they might have their own magic of growls and yowls, hardly usable for humanoids. While not many examples of such magics have been identified—most being supernatural and spell-like abilities of magical beasts rather than proper spells usable by adventurers—some of such spells are listed.

Avalon takes a common spell and provides you with a number of alterations and additions to add excitement and useful options for your next adventure.  Each issue of Avalon Spell Books will focus on a new spell, discussing different versions of the spell, providing different components that can be used to alter the way the spell works, and even adding feats and new magical items linked to the spell in question.

Tree Shape. Most spellcasters do not even remember this spell exists except under some extraordinary circumstances.  Lacking any natural inclination towards serene photosynthesis, they use it when they need to stay motionless and unnoticed somewhere dangerous for many hours, or when their companions need a “large, dead, tree trunk” to get across a particularly nasty stream.

Or maybe when the group wants some shade in the middle of a desert.

Rooting and vegetating still offer more interesting experiences for patient spellcasters, ready to look for new magics in arboreal life. The first option of interest is the fact that a tree can sleep wherever it can root, ignoring many inconveniences that would give a humanoid a bad night. It is fully possible to sleep while being a tree, even getting a proper night’s rest, provided the shapechange duration is long enough. Much like a normal sleeping character, the dormant tree has reduced Perception abilities. If the spell duration ends before the character gets enough rest, the event should be treated as any other hazardous awakening in the game.

Then there is using Tree Shape underwater. Yes, contrary to popular belief, one can do so—in this case the spell transforms the caster into a large kelp, firmly attached to the river- or seabed, instead of a common shrub. In case of any doubts, the Game Master may require the character to succeed at a Knowledge (nature) check DC 15 to choose a proper plant type in which to transform. Since kelp can “breathe” water perfectly, the caster does not need any additional means of water-breathing for as long as the spell duration lasts.

Many demolition derbies occur on a normal racetrack, though they are often modified in order to add muddy patches and crossovers. The rules for such tracks are much like any other race, with the first vehicle across the finish line being declared the winner. Of course, in a destruction derby, you can be the first across the line by bashing all of the other vehicles until no one else can move, thus making you the only one who can even cross the finish line. Kung Fu Kuma: Races of Qiu Sang is an expansion book for the Kung Fu Kuma campaign world and the Pathfinder Game System™. It expands the list of available PC races by six, and includes one companion race (for use as friends, allies, loyal servants, and henchman, as well as NPCs). That’s seven new races available for Kung Fu Kuma campaigns, six of them directly for use as Player Characters.

One thing about all these races—they are Animal Folk. That is a given in the campaign world of Kung Fu Kuma. But if you purchased this book intending it for use in a different game setting or universe, all of these races are compatible with the general Pathfinder Game System™, though the Gamemaster will have to come up with some reason why Animal Folk exist in that campaign world.

Six New PC Races!

The Empire of Qiu Sang is made up of twelve Clans who joined together in the great Clan Accord. Six of these races (and Humans) are detailed in the Kung Fu Kuma Players Handbook—specifically, the six races that dwell in the Mang Wan Valley, the valley of Kung Fu.

Individuals of the other six races do live in the Mang Wan Valley as well, but they are not greatly represented there. These other six Animal Folk races generally prefer to be out in the country proper, closer to politics and power, and closer to wine and wealth. The Mang Wan Valley is a beautiful place, to be sure. but it also an isolated place of meditation and quiet contemplation (and Kung Fu). Those who desire political power want to live closer to the Imperial Capital.

This divide amongst the twelve races might be best thought of as a divide between the six Kung Fu Races and the six Imperial Races. While there is no such actual divide recognized by anyone in the Empire, it is a simple, shorthand way of illustrating the difference. Now, this is not to say that no one outside of the Mang Wan Valley practices Kung Fu, nor that the Mang Wan Valley is entirely devoid of politics. Kung Fu is widely practiced everywhere within Qiu Sang, and politics is certainly practiced in the Mang Wan Valley. The above divide is a thing of emphasis, not of absolutes.
