There are Ambusher units like Pirate Ambushers that try to move around ambushing characters to gain some sort of advantage according to the ASA guidelines. In the map that goes along with my ambusher encounter there are no obstacles or anything else to hide behind and I couldn't find any specific information about ambushing in the ASA guide, the players handbook or the DM guide besides ambushes meant for the initial surprise in an encounter.

So, when a monster is told to Ambush as his action does this mean he tries to get advantage by flanking a character? If there is no flanking option is it just a standard melee engagement and attack?

This is from the ASA guide:
Ambusher (Out of Melee)
Roll 1D20
1–5: Move to ambush the closest enemy character
within sight.
6–10: Move to ambush the furthest enemy
character within sight.
11–15: Move to ambush the closest enemy fighter
character within sight; otherwise re-roll.
16–20: Move to ambush the closest enemy
spellcaster character within sight; otherwise
re-roll.

Correct, they will either try to get behind the target, or the best position possible to get some kind of advantage. They generally will not just stand in front of a foe and swing away, but try to get some sort of advantage over their foes.
